The construction of this landfill illustrated the joint effort between Regulatory agencies and private business to remediate industrial contaminated areas. Over two million cubic yards of lime sludge and slag created during the acetylene making process was relocated into an active, lined landfill. Tug Hill Construction has been awarded multiple contracts to remediate existing areas and construct double lined composite landfills within the footprint of the previously contaminated area.

HONEYWELL ALLTIFT REMEDIATION BUFFALO , NY 2004-2005

The Alltift Remediation project located in Buffalo, NY included the consolidation of hazardous waste to reduce the contaminated footprint from 50 acres to 22 acres. An impermeable synthetic lined cap was placed over the 22 acre landfill site. Barrier walls and collection trenches were installed around the perimeter of the landfill to collect contaminated groundwater from the landfill site. Adjacent wetlands were stabilized and cleaned of contaminated sediments and replanted. During the remediation of the wetlands Tug Hill Construction rescued and relocated over 200 turtles. Community air monitoring was implemented to protect neighboring residents and workers.

DUPONT REMEDIAL ACTION – BELL LANDFILL TERRY TOWNSHIP, PA 1998

In Spring of 1998 Tug Hill Construction was awarded the contract for Remedial Action Construction at the Bell Landfill site in Bradford County, Pennsylvania. The project, owned by DuPont Chemical, consisted of the collection of on and off-site debris, capping approximately 6 acres of hazardous landfill, installation of a leachate collection system and passive gas collection system, and site restoration. Golder Construction Services provided construction management at the site. DuPont, Tug Hill Construction, Golder and several state, national and regional regulatory agencies enjoyed a successful and early completion of this high profile remediation.

ENDICOTT LANDFILL CLOSURE ENDICOTT, NY 1996

The Endicott contract entailed the closure of a 70 acre, Class 2 inactive hazardous waste landfill which was located between a public golf course and a municipal airport. The project involved over 200,000 cy of waste relocation and consolidation and final cover placement of both soil and pavement cap sections. The soil cap consisted of intermediate soil cover, gas vent system, clay liner and topsoil layers requiring the import of several hundred thousand cubic yards of material The project also involved installation of a 30 foot deep leachate interceptor and barrier trench along the banks of the Susquehanna River.
