O&W RAILROAD TUNNEL REHAB, PEDESTRIAN PROMENADE & BIKEWAY OSWEGO , NY 2001
OWNER: County of Oswego, NY
CONTACT: Mr. Joseph C. Maryak, JCM Architectural Associates, 315-424-0141
For its work at the O&W railroad site, Tug Hill Construction was named Contractor of the Year by the CNY American Public Works Association. This heavy/civil project involved the total rehabilitation of a 19th century stone railroad tunnel in downtown Oswego, NY. Additionally the project involved construction of new pedestrian and bike ways, sidewalks, parking areas, and extensive landscaping throughout the downtown area. The existing stone tunnel, built in 1880 was in a state of vast disrepair. Tug Hill Construction installed 235 precast concrete wall and ceiling panels with a gantry crane, in order to facilitate construction within the existing tunnel. The wall panels were 10 ft. wide, 15 ft. long and 12 inches thick. Each ceiling panel was 4 ft. wide, 24 ft. long and 15 inches thick. In 22 working days the panels were installed within the existing 1880 vintage tunnel. Tug Hill Construction worked closely with its precast manufacturer in order to design pre-cast panels which were molded to replicate a stone pattern representative of the original tunnel.
